  1. As a Director of IT, I've used Penguinet since it's first inception. I love it so much that it has been my only remote access program for the past 9 years.

The one feature that I would love to have at this point is the ability to select either a parent folder or to use the control key to select multiple client profiles to open all sessions at once.

In my enterprise I have many systems that are redundant or in clusters (i.e. appserver1->appserver5) and I have to select one, open the SSH session, go back into the profiles, select…

  2. I would love to be able to select tabs and then choose a window sort.

For instance. I usually have 10+ tabs open, but would love an easy way to side - by - side compare two or three of them. So, if I could select the ones I wish to see, then click "Tile Vertically" and easily have them side by side... That would be awesome.

I like the idea of this – reminds me of the Windows 7 advert here in the UK or IE’s “Quick Tabs”.

We have a number of user interface changes being debated. For example, a quick way to zoom in and out of terminal sessions would benefit you here I think.

    Any other feedback out there?

Do you want to perform the tar on the remote host?

If so, there are technical constraints due to the nature of SCP – we don’t have access to a shell to execute commands.

A possible solution would be to have PenguiNet initiate a terminal session (with Send Commands) in the background. Is this what you envisaged?

Finally, please note that you can turn on compression which will help in the transfer time of files without having to tar!

  5. Have an option "Allow only one instance of PenguiNet". If PenguiNet icon is clicked and it's already open, it can bring this other instance to focus. This is done by IE8 in Win7. New windows can be opened from there.

This is much better than having a windows tab full of programs with multiple tabs inside them.

  6. When highlighting (copy) tabbed code from vi, when you paste tabs are converted to their space equivalent...

The problem here is that we can’t tell, as a teminal emulator, that those are tabs. Say the cursor is on the left-hand side of the screen. The editor (be it vi or another editor) needs to output 6 tabs before outputting text. It might send “\t\t\t\t\t\t”. But it might equally send “\x1B[24G”. Since the second options is one byte less, many editors (and other apps) will choose the second option. At that point, we can no longer say whether those 24 blank characters at the start of the line are tabs or not.

The best we can do here would be to provide a setting along the lines of “when multiples of spaces appear at the start of a line, convert them to tabs”. You could then set to the tab size you normally use.

    How does that sound?

  7. Instead of having to navigate my very large tree of hosts, it would be nice to have a quick open text input box that you could type in the connection name. This could also provide suggestions based on the users input.

  8. I have about 50 server I connect to. Many different Unix and Linux OS's. I can connect using SSH, never a problem. But about half of the server do not let me connect using SCP for file transfers. The message it says is: Permission to change to the selected directory was denied. The directory was not changed. I use the same password for all and have LDAP server. I checked my password, but nothing will let me get to these paticular servers?

I use WinSCP for these servers and connect with no problem? What's going on here?

  9. It would be nice if a Penguinet session could be initiated and controlled from a script. This would allow us to automate SSH sessions (for example, to automate changes to equipment). I'd like the capability to either launch Penguinet from a batch file specifying a script to run or have API access to Penguinet functions from an existing scripting language (VBScript, Perl, etc.) The feature should not require any user interaction via GUI.

You can already get part-way to what you want to do. Take a look at Help|Contents→Getting started|Command line options and Session|Connection profiles→Send commands. It’s not full scripting, but it will allow you to start PN from a batch file and execute a series of commands.

We’ll review the options for scripting.

  10. This might already be an option, but I couldn't find it...it would be nice to be able to specify which codepage to use for character translation in a session. For instance, there are times when I need CP437.
